i scored 24/41 on gmat prep 2 and it said that i had a scaled score of 18.
Is it possible or there is an error on the algorithm.

Unfortunately, it's highly unlikely that the GMATPrep algorithm is malfunctioning. This test is the closest approximation to the real exam.

What I think is, you were able to answer the easy questions and was not able to handle the 17 medium to difficult ones.
Thats why your scaled score is 18 though you have a high count of correct questions. In GMAT the category of question you answer matters.

Also you have to consider the fast that some questions you answered were experimental questions which dont carry any points.

There is nothing wrong with the algorithm.
You can download the latest GPREP from www.mba.com as it keeps changing in couple of months and give it a try again to be on a safe side

Cheers,
