Boldface answer choices doubt

by itishree » Wed Oct 16, 2013 10:22 pm
123. Museums that house Renaissance oil paintings
typically store them in environments that are carefully
kept within narrow margins of temperature and
humidity to inhibit any deterioration. Laboratory tests
have shown that the kind of oil paint used in these
paintings actually adjusts to climatic changes quite
well. If, as some museum directors believe, paint is
the most sensitive substance in these works,

then by relaxing the standards for temperature and
humidity control, museums can reduce energy
costs without risking damage to these paintings
.
Museums would be rash to relax those standards,
however, since results of.preliminary tests indicate
that gesso, a compound routinelyused by Renaissance
artists to help paint adhere to the canvas, is unable to
withstand significant variations in humidity.
Inthe argument above, the two portions in boldface
play which of the following roles?
(A) The first is an objection that has been raised
against the position taken by the argument; the
second is the position taken by the argument.
(B) The first is the position taken by the argument;
the second is the position that the argument
calls into question.
(C) The first is a judgment that has been offered in
support of the position that the argument calls
into question; the second is a circumstance on
which that judgment is, in part, based.
(D) The first is a judgment that has been offered in
support of the position that the argument calls
into question; the second is that position.
(E) The first is a claim that the argument calls into
question; the second is the position taken by
the argument.

Hi All,
Can any body help me in solving boldface question, i get stuck with the terms used in the answer choices :( (judgment that has been offered in
support of the position that the argument calls
into question; the second is that position) , it would be great if little explanation can be given for the above options choices

The following is the approach I follow on boldface question:
- Write down the mapping of the entire Boldface CR on the notepad
- Find out the conclusion and underline it
- CIRCLE B1 and B2 for the two boldface facts in your mapping

Makes my life easier on such questions and saves a lot of time :)

Heres my sample mapping on the notepad

Please excuse my handwriting :P

Now coming back to the CR question:
We see that B1 is based on the directors viewpoint; B2 is a possible outcome of B1 --> Eliminate A, B. The position taken by the argument is the arguments conclusion.
(A) The first is an objection that has been raised against the position taken by the argument; the second is the position taken by the argument.
(B) The first is the position taken by the argument; the second is the position that the argument calls into question.

The second is not the position taken by the argument, its what a possible outcome of B1 could be, Eliminate E
(E) The first is a claim that the argument calls into question; the second is the position taken by the argument.

(C) The first is a judgment that has been offered in support of the position that the argument calls into question; the second is a circumstance on which that judgment is, in part, based.
(D) The first is a judgment that has been offered in support of the position that the argument calls into question; the second is that position.
C & D both state the role of B1 correctly in the first part (a judgement on the directors' viewpoint --> and its outcome -- B2-- which is questioned by the argument ).
C reverses the role of B2 --> it is an outcome of B1 and not vice-versa, so we are left with D by POE.
Answer : D
Hope it helps.
