Nubians - Tough One

by linfongyu » Thu Oct 16, 2008 10:54 am
The exhibition of art from Nubians, the site of a Black civilization that goes back to the fourth millennium B.C., makes clear the Nubians combined artistic elements from Egypt to that of sub-Saharan Africa.

(A) the Nubians combined artistic elements from Egypt to that
(B) that the Nubians combined artistic elements from Egypt to that
(C) the Nubians combined artistic elements from Egypt with that
(D) that the Nubians combined artistic elements from Egypt with those
(E) that Nubians combined artistic elements from Egypt and those

Answer to follow shortly after discussion. Please post answer and logic... Gut feeling is welcomed.

my 2 cents

combine with is the right idiom. so that eliminates a - b - e.

'those' agrees with 'elements' - hence D should be the answer.

Thx

(D) is the correct answer.

1. Use of THAT after MAKES CLEAR is necessary. So eliminate the choices (A) and (C).
2. COMBINED WITH is the correct IDIOM. Hence choose (D).

I will also go with D

However, IMO, the best answer would have been
that the Nubians combined artistic elements of Egypt with those

Oxford dictionary says:

combine verb, noun
verb /k{e}mbaIn/
1 ~ (sth) (with sth) | ~ A and B (together) to come together to form a single thing or group; to join two or more things or groups together to form a single one:
[V] Hydrogen and oxygen combine to form water. * Hydrogen combines with oxygen to form water. * Several factors had combined to ruin our plans. * [VN] Combine all the ingredients in a bowl. * Combine the eggs with a little flour and heat the mixture gently. * The German team scored a combined total of 652 points.
2 [VN] ~ A and / with B to have two or more different features or characteristics; to put two or more different things, features or qualities together:
The hotel combines comfort with convenience. * This model combines a telephone and fax machine. * a kitchen and dining-room combined * We are still looking for someone who combines all the necessary qualities. * They have successfully combined the old with the new in this room.
3 [VN] ~ A and / with B to do two or more things at the same time:
The trip will combine business with pleasure. * She has successfully combined a career and bringing up a family.

so as I see no difference as for me in usage.

As to the sentence:

The exhibition of art from Nubians, the site of a Black civilization that goes back to the fourth millennium B.C., makes clear

What does the exhibition makes clear? the Nubians or sth about the Nubians?! - thus A and C are clearly out.

(B) that the Nubians combined artistic elements from Egypt to that - you see? yeahh! they tricks you on this idiom you look at it and think "OK great! from X to Y Egypt is parallel to sub-Saharan Africa - I will choose this!" - WRONG! - this the way they trick you. Logically "that" does not refer to anything in the sentence.

(E) that Nubians combined artistic elements from Egypt and those - Does it seem ok to you?! I would have chosen this because everything is fine here. I don't know whether combine A and B or combine A with B is right.
the trick is that in E "that Nubians", (defined as "the site of a Black civilization" ) combined artisti elements.
People can combine elements, but not sites.

Asnwer is D.

"D" because 'combined x with those of y' ...
