Next Generation - 1000CRs

by kajcha » Fri Sep 14, 2007 6:58 am
All those who keep a journal will be heard by the next generation. Some of these journal writers are true artists, others humorous observers of the commonplace, and still others insufferable egotists who feel compelled to record their every thought.
If the statements above are true, which one of the following must be true?
(A) Not all of those who are humorous observers of the commonplace will be heard by the next generation.
(B) Everyone who will be heard by the next generation keeps a journal.
(C) The next generation will hear both insufferable egotists and true artists.
(D) Some of those who keep journals are not true artists, humorous observers of the commonplace, or insufferable egotists.
(E) The next generation will bear some of those who are true artists but not all of them.

Hi Kajcha,
I was also stuck between C & D but I think D should be the asnwer, as Q asks "which one of the following must be true? ",

In C we have "The next generation will hear both insufferable egotists and true artists"

The stimulus does'nt exactly say that insufferable egotists create a journal, instead they "feel compelled to record their every thought"
also the choice says that "next generation will hear both", now this portrays 100 % certainity, but this may not be certain with the insufferable egotists.
+ the nos of insufferable egotists may be too small which opens a possibilty that they may not be heard( as they come under still others)

D seems correct to me coz the stimulus highlights categories using words like some, others, still others

i.e All = some + others + still others

whereas it should be

All = some + others + still others + and the remaining

so we can say that here the author has higlighted 3 categories but we cannot say that these constitute ALL. Imagine these on a pie chart of ALL those who keep journals.

so D reflects that a portion is remaining.

What is the OA
Regards
Samir

Hey Kajcha,
What did u think on this one, actually I've seen a couple questions like this, where the correct choice was pretty much like D here & the resoning that I gave, now after this one I'm a little confused. Well actually C also seems to be very powerful here (no doubt abt that), but I used my empirical knowlege to answer this one.

Samir

samir, I will vote for C as this refers to both statement from the question. D just talks about the premise.

Argument mentions SOME OF JOURNAL WRITERS ARE TRUE ARTISTS. It does not any anything about NOT TRUE ARTISTS. We cannot say whether 'not true artists' actually keep journals. This option is outside the premise. Hope it helps. IMO C
