New device

by kiranlegend » Wed Aug 20, 2008 12:22 pm
Analyst: The pace of technological development brings a constant stream of new devices to the market, and many of them enjoy commercial success. But announcing new technology too soon after the introduction of a successful device can backfire. Once consumers hear about the new device, they may stop buying the one currently on sale. So, if a company wishes to announce the upcoming sale of a new device, it should wait until purchases of the old device have begun to decline.

Which of the following, if true, would best support the analyst's main assertion?
New technology often becomes less expensive after an initial surge in sales.
Media outlets, such as television programs and magazines, often report on the planned introduction of new devices while the sales of old devices are still strong.
Many consumers are unable to determine whether new technology is superior to current technology.
Surveys have shown that some consumers make only one or two technology purchases per year, whereas others make more frequent purchases.
Consumers tend to be loyal to technology companies whose products they enjoy using.

please explain.. :)

For me, the fact that "the sales of old devices are still strong" makes me think that they reached their maturity point and that it is time to launch the new one.

IMO B:

(A) does not work, the passage does not talk about the expense of a device

(B) Given the conclusion: So, if a company wishes to announce the upcoming sale of a new device, it should wait until purchases of the old device have begun to decline. This response seems to fit best

(C) doesn't work given this sentence: Once consumers hear about the new device, they may stop buying the one currently on sale.

(D) is irrelevant

(E) is irrelevant

What is the answer?

B should be the ans

as in C if company want to announce the new product and consumer is unable to distinguish technology then it may lead to increase in sale of new product or decrease in sale of new product.. based on consumers..

But in B ... if a declaration is made by media consumer on hearing it will go for new product while old one was still selling good.. thus it strengthens the argument..

Answer should be B.

B actually represents the main assertion.

IMO : B

The analyst states that "and many of them enjoy commercial success" and "Once consumers hear about the new device, they may stop buying the one currently on sale". The first statement states that many new products enjoy commercial success means that when they are launched their sale is large. Once the sale of new technology is large people will stop buying old devices thus reducing their sale.
