By applying optimization techniques commonly used to plan operations, it is possible to determine how much effort ought to be devoted to each of a company's products in order to meet its goals in both the short and long terms.

(A)it is possible to determine how much effort ought to be devoted to each of a company's products in order to meet its goals in both the short and long terms

(B)a company's managers can determine how much effort should be dedicated to each of the company's products in order to meet its short and long term goals

(C)it can be determined by company managers how much effort ought to be devoted to each of the company's products in order to meet its goals, both short and long term

(D)it may be possible for company managers to determine how much effort should be dedicated to each of these products in order to meet the company's short and long term goals

(E)managers at a company can determine how much effort ought to be dedicated to each of these products in order to meet the company's goals in both the short and long term

Both E and B correctly modify the phrase "By applying..."
B however, seems awkward due to use of should.
Hence, E

What is the OA?

OA is B, however I don't understand what IT's refers to in B!

Correction : Oh my gosh , what stupid am I? Somehow I have decided that IT's can not refer back to company's

damn

So here the fight is in between choices (B) and (E). Look at the bold part marked in the above given options.

Here are the differences:-

1. Bold part of (B) is more concise than bold part of (E).
2. Bold part of (E) changes the meaning of the sentence. It can interpreted as company's goal can be meet in both short term and long term. It looks like that manager can meet the same goal either in short term (if manager wants so) or in long term (if manager wants so). Whereas actual sentence focus meeting the short terms goals and long term goals (here both are different).

Also, ITS correctly refers back to Company.

Here is the rule:-
RULE wrote:the rule is that NON-POSSESSIVE pronouns can't refer to POSSESSIVE nouns.
"its" is a possessive pronoun, so it can have either a possessive or a non-possessive noun as its antecedent.

(E)managers at a company can determine how much effort ought to be dedicated to each of these products in order to meet the company’s goals in both the short and long term

E is wrong because of ''these products''. There is no such antecedent which ''these products'' can refer to .
I dont think there is difference between ''in order to meet both short and long term goals'' and ''in order to meet goals in both short and long term''
So ans is B

A small correction mate .

short and long term goals - they suggest there are 2 goals so use of BOTH is redundant.

Hence the usage short and long term goals - is correct

And goals in both short and long term' - in correct .
"Know thyself" and "Nothing in excess"
