Mixture problem

by ahsunmahmood » Sat Feb 27, 2010 3:15 am
An alloy contains copper and zinc in the ratio of 5:3 and another contains copper and tin in the ratio of 8:5. If equal weights of the two are melted together to form a new alloy, find the weight of tin per kg in the new alloy. Can u please solve it?

Cu : Zn = 5 : 3 - A and
Cu : Tin = 8 : 5 - B
In mixture of 2x kgs
i.e. x kgs of each A and B
A+B = Cu:Zn:Cu:Tin
is 5x/8: 3x/8: 8x/13:5x/13
in 2x kgs of mixture Tin is 5x/13
per kg of mixture (5x/13)/2x = 5/26

What are the answer choices, it is imp as sometimes plugging the values , the solution is faster ?
