Manhattan RC Question

by mzkfrk » Sat Aug 06, 2011 2:14 am
Just came across this question.
Editorial: The Intercontinental Bank should reallocate the voting shares of its members
in order to more effectively shape global economic policy. For example, China
comprises about 15 percent of the world's gross domestic product but has only a 3
percent voting share, whereas Belgium, with less than 1 percent of the global economy,
has a 2 percent share.

Which of the following is an assumption upon which the editorial's authors depend
in suggesting a way to more effectively shape global economic policy?
(A) The United States has a larger voting share of the Intercontinental Bank than
does China or Belgium.
(B) The specific allocation of voting shares factors into the Intercontinental Bank's
effectiveness in shaping global economic policy.
(C) Only voting shares that are precisely proportional to each countty's contrlbution
to the global economy are appropriate for the Intercontinental Bank.
(D) The Intercontinental Bank is necessary to the maintenance of a prosperous
global economy.
(E) As one of the fastest growing economies, China should have a larger voting
share in the Intercontinental Bank.

The OA is B but I am not able to understand, why it cannot be D.
If the Intercontinental Bank is not necessary to the maintenance of a prosperous global economy then the whole argument would stand false because there might be other ways through which global economy can be made prosperous.

Hi,

Only B, C are suitable options to think on.. C is extreme.. So is D, also D is out of scope

C - The word 'Only'
D - Topic is on voting shares.. No where we are discussing about the mandatory existance of a bank.

Who knows even without that we may acheive the end result.
First take: 640 (50M, 27V) - RC needs 300% improvement
Second take: coming soon..

In an assumption question it is best to find conclusion and ask WHY? Search answer for this why in the argument.

Conclusion: The Intercontinental Bank should reallocate the voting shares of its members
in order to more effectively shape global economic policy.

WHY?

A,D,E could be answers but they are out of the scope of the conclusion.
C links the Bank with what is "appropriate". But the conclusion does not discuss anything about appropriateness.
B correctly links both the elements: "Intercontinental Bank" and "effectiveness in shaping global economic policy".
