1. To distinguish quickly between king and coral snakes slithering out from under a rock, hikers should look at the bands of color on their bodies: red and yellow bands touch on the venomous coral snake, but they are always separated by black bands on the harmless king snake.

between kings and coral snakes that slither

among kings and coral snakes that are slithering

among king and coral snakes as they slither

kings from coral snakes slithering

2. Though the average urban commuter could travel on public rail systems more efficiently and at lesser cost than they can in private automobiles, many residents even of crowded cities prefer the feeling of autonomy inherent in driving one’s own car.

1st,IMO: A,reasons..
a)Right idiom is "to distinguish between X and Y"
b)"King" needs to be singular.

2nd,IMO:D,reasons..
a)"average urban commuter " is singular, so it will take singular pronouns "he or she".
b)Only "lower cost " is the right usage.

3rd.,IMO:E,reasons..
a)In every option except D and E , the opening clause modifies the wrong nouns.
b)We ignore D,because it uses passive voice and its wordier.
c)In E,"which was never connected to a large land mass" modifies Hawai perfectly.

ps;:Please mark the part to be corrected properly.

Thanks.

thanks Raunek..

could you please explain the first two qeustions' correct choices:

1. coral snakes is plural right then why king needs to be singular?
2. costs is quantifiable hence i used fewer costs.. why lower cost is better? innit costs a quantifiable quantity? please explain

@kiran

1) king and coral are types of snake so both must have same form P or S.

2)Fewer costs!! whew  ....umm take it this way, it is not the number of costs that has decreased rather it is the number of $ we would have to pay to fetch something. Thats the sense the sentence is tryin to convey, I guess :)

"harmless king snake"....

I m a bit confused..is king a part of coral snakes or its a diff type all together...but the second part says...

" but they are always separated by black bands on the harmless king snake."

i found king snake singular here...so went with A.
But if its a different type(coz the second part of the sentence refers to types of both)..then answer would be B. ...btw Never heard of King snakes. (jst king cobra!!! )

wats d OA??

Between I am not 2 gud at snake stuff and all, got the idea just from 2nd sentence, ne1 cares to confirm it for me: :)

Hi,

Quest 2

How is cost considered a countable noun in this case.
How much (not many) does the book cost ? -- Referring COST as Uncountable Noun

According to me Lower or fewer both refer to countable noun thus A should be the answer

king and coral snakes is seen as one subject

kings and coral are not parallel, kings in plural and coral is singular
So A is correct

In question 2, 'the costs of traveling by public rail', cost, here is an uncountable noun. Had it mentioned other costs as well, then you can treat it as a countable noun. So D is correct here

In question 3, E is correct, the other choices have modifier issues
