Favorite school or best school?

by npoguy » Mon Dec 24, 2012 1:32 pm
I have been working for a start-up non-profit for the last 6+ years and plan on going into consulting after graduation. I have been admitted to Georgeotwn, Virginia and Northwestern, with Duke hopefully coming soon.

That said, my decision is essentially between Virginia and Northwestern. I loved everything about the Darden experience, from Charlottesville, to the case study method, the close-knit community, and the beautiful campus. Northwestern hasn't really done anything wrong, per say, but I just didn't get the same great vibe.

My question is: would I be making a mistake in passing up Northwestern to go to Virginia, especially given that, a) Northwestern is a better school by most accounts, and b) it sends more graduates to top consulting firms?

I don't really have relevant work experience to fall back on (when applying to consulting firms) so I'm thinking it's more important I go to the best school and I'm guessing Kellogg has a great community too that I just didn't get to experience given my short stay (there for less than a day).

As much as I want to enjoy my experience, I understand the decades after school are far more important than the two short years in school, so my gut is to go to the school that gives me the best chance to succeed and that's Northwestern. Would you agree?

Thanks for your help!

First of all, congratulations on the amazing results!

You're asking a tough question and I don't have a clear answer for you. Yes it makes sense to go to the more famous school, and yes Northwestern is a great school for consulting. So it seems to be the better choice.

But this is just cold facts, and in reality you need to go to a place where you can live and study etc. Of course it also needs to fulfill your goals. Have you talked to Virginia to see if they might not want to sweeten the offer somewhat? (Don't know if this would make a difference to you, but it also can't hurt).
