Expert Evaluation

by PRJambala » Wed Feb 18, 2015 5:18 pm
Hello Experts,

I have been employed in the Oil&Gas industry for the last nine years. In these nine years I have primarily worked in Operations and HR roles. I am an Electrical Engineer with a university percentage of 82.

I took GMAT yesterday and scored 670 Q43 V37 IR6. I am a bit disappointed with my quant score as I ran out of time and had to randomly guess on the last 10 questions.

I wish to apply to the following schools and would appreciate your feedback about my chances with my current GMAT score.

First Preference
MIT: Sloan
Kellogg School of Management
Kenan-Flagler Business School
London Business School

Second Preference
McCombs School of Business
Jones Graduate School of Business
Kelley School of Business
Tuck School of Business

Dear PRJambala,

A few thoughts for you to mull over:
  1. A bit more insights about your work experience in terms of accomplishments and progression will be good to understand for making a better informed assessment. In general, oil and gas experience can be a double edged sword in many ways. It is good because the experience and the exposure builds a lot of character and is generally valued by everyone. The tricky part is that the industry is not known to hire international candidates after MBA.
  2. Which brings us to the next point about your career goals. You've not mentioned that either. HR is a pretty non-common experience for someone with engineering background. It will be vital to understand what's your post-MBA plan and how does it connect with your career so far.
  3. While we've helped folks get into most/all of those schools, but for reasons mentioned here, I will refrain from providing gut-based school assessments. That said, for many of the schools mentioned in your first preference, a better GMAT score will help. Considering that you seem to have faltered on the quant section (usually the strong point for engineers), with a bit more practice and given the time at hand, am sure this is an area you can work upon
Hope this gives you the right start

Cheers,
