Author of the phrases "it was a dark and stormy night" and "the pen is mightier than the sword," Lord Lytton employed a dubious style-hackneyed prose, verbal excesses, and canonical clichés-that had been as popular during his own time as it is reviled in ours.

had been as popular during his own time as it is

is as popular during his time as

were as popular during his own time as they are

has been as popular during his own time as it has been

was as popular during his own time as it is

Careful! What's the noun pairing with the two verbs here? Think very carefully, and avoid the test-maker's tricks and traps!

Yep, good job! They put those plural nouns (prose, excesses, cliches) in there to confuse you and make the plural verbs sound correct. However, the core structure is actually "a dubious STYLE that WAS popular and IS reviled."
