local colorists

The work of short fiction writer Charles Chesnutt reflects characteristic interests of his contemporary " local colorists "as much as the intellectual ferment and historical reassessments of Black American culture during the late 19th century .

a. as much as the intellectual ferment and historical reassessments of Black American culture during the late 19th century
b. as much as it did the intellectual ferment in, and historical reassessments of, Black American culture in the late 19th century
c. as much as it had reflected, during the late 19th century, the intellectual ferment and historical reassessments of Black American culture
d. as much as it was reflective and characteristic of the intellectual ferment and historical reassessments of late 19th century Black American culture
e. as much as it does the intellectual ferment and historical reassessments of late 19th century Black American culture
[spoiler]
This was the first question on my test today, and I had a real hard time figuring it out. Finally, I could do it in 3 mins. Please try and benefit from it.

B, C, D, E : no antecedent for it.

A : is looking perfect.

I pick E.

B, C and D break the tense parallelism. Between A and E, last part of A is missing the verb.

IT in E correctly refers to The Work.

IMO: E

IT refers to "The work of short fiction writer Charles Chesnutt"

DOES is proverb for "reflects".

Answer should be "E". Close contenders were A & E but A has wrong comparison.

I pick A, I don't think the "IT" is required.
Is caught between a rock and a hard place!

I will go with A. In E, historical reassessments of late 19th century Black American culture .. I guess, the meaning gets changed.

In A, it states during the late 19th century.
"Native of" is used for a individual while "Native to" is used for a large group

A goes like this : The work reflects X as much as Y and Z. thus "A" compares Work to "intellectual ferment" and "historical reassessments", but they are not kind of work in themselves instead characteristics of work.

E goes like this : The work reflects X as much as It does "Y" and "Z". Correctly compares 3 different reflections by Work.

IMO E.

Hope this Helped.

I made a collossal error in missing tenses.

See the comment below. I should have rad all the choices. While B corrects the statement to include "it " to stand in place of " the work", it is incorrect because the choice uses past tense. The reflection is current and thus E uses "it" and uses "does" for "reflects" .

Oops! I should have looked at the tense -thats why B is incorrect.

The work of short fiction writer Charles Chesnutt reflects characteristic interests of his contemporary "local colorists" as much as it does the intellectual ferment and historical reassessments of late 19th century Black American culture.

Thanks Suman for the question.
