1. Pensions are now viewed as a deferred payment of salary, money a worker is compelled to put away to take care of one's later years.
(A) a worker is compelled to put away to take care of one's
(B) that a worker is compelled to put away to take care of oneself in
(C) a worker is compelled to put away to take care of oneself in
(D) workers are compelled to put away to take care of them in
(E) workers are compelled to put away to take care of themselves in

OA - E

Do explain the reason for selecting any option....

Can anyone please help me with it ?

I would recommend the use of the spoiler to hide the OA.

I think the split between ABC and DE is parallelism.

take care of them is wrong. Use of them makes it ambiguous as to whom the "them" is pointing to.

Think of this: Workers put away money to take care of themselves.
Vineesh,

@voodoo_child

first a request: please use spoiler to hide the OA and second please use Underline option to mark the questionable part of the sentence (its painful otherwise)

Now, coming to your question...what's the source?? I'm asking this because i think its a wrong question. why?? see as you said the OA is E

so we get,

Pensions are now viewed as a deferred payment of salary, money workers are compelled to put away to take care of themselves in later years.

Both the clause before and after COMMA seems to me INDEPENDENT CLAUSES, and you can't connect 2 IC's with just a comma, its a COMMA SPLICE error.

This is just my view, if m wrong please correct me.

Apart from Atul's comments please find my reasoning as below-

Pensions is a plural word, therefore, it should be the money of many workers. Hence left with D and E option out of which in D usage of "them" is not correct as it can refer to "workers" or some other people which is ambiguous. Hence, E is the best option

@aspirant2011

don't you think there is a comma splice error in Op E...connecting two IC with just a comma...see my post just above your post...and clear...

Hi Atul,

I see that "money a worker is compelled to put away to take care of one's later years." is not an IC because "which money" are we talking about. The "money" here being referred is dependent on "pensions"............don't u think the same way????

HI the clause you indicate is incorrect...please see Op E again

the 2nd clause in opE will be
"Money workers are compelled to put away to take care of themselves in later years "

Now what do you think about this???

I still feel the same that " which money" are we talking about.Because "money workers are compelled to put away to take care of themselves" is dependent on pensions..........

The second one isn't an independent clause. Read
money workers are compelled to put away to take care of themselves in later years
as
money that workers are compelled to put away to take care of themselves in later years.

Shorter versions, also not independent clauses:
