toward vs towards?

Can anyone give me a definitive ruling on when toward is used and when towards is used?

The only thing I could find is in a Princeton Review Grammar Smart book it says "Toward is American, towards is British, use accordingly."

I know people that only use one or the other, and I have found conflicting info on the web. I'm not truly concerned how to use it in my regular routine - just want to know what the GMAT wants to see. Thanks!

That comment is correct. The GMAT favors American usage, so stick with toward.
