The first point of elimination should be the subject verb agreement.
The subject is plural here, hence we need a plural verb - were.
Eliminate C and D

When faced with a choice, always follow VAN.

Option A does not follow this rule. Plus that should not be preceded by a comma
Option B is correct as is.
Option E is in passive voice and uses were and influence, which falls below influenced in the VAN rule

Correct Option: B

(E) were an influence on generations of bluegrass artists, was also an inspiration to many musicians, including Elvis Presley and Jerry Garcia, whose music was significantly different from that of
In A, that lacks a clear referent.
Eliminate A.

In C and D, was (singular) does not agree with repertory, views and vocal style (plural).
Eliminate C and D.

E: whose music was significantly different from that of his own [music]
Here, the word in brackets is omitted, but its presence is implied.
Since that serves to stand in for music, the following meaning is conveyed:
whose music was significantly different from the music of his own music
This meaning is nonsensical.
Eliminate E.

The correct answer is B.

can understand all of your above reply. however, a quick clarification needed on E.

as you've mentioned that "Since that serves to stand in for music, the following meaning is conveyed:whose music was significantly different from the music of his own music" -- so,apart from the fact that this meaning is nonsensical, the following is also an potential error in E, I think:

possessive pronoun (his) and copy pronoun (that) are used here together - this is grammatically incorrect as well. we can't use BOTH of these together,i guess. am I correct ?

Generally, COPY PRONOUN + of + POSSESSIVE will be redundant and thus incorrect.
However, it is possible for COPY PRONOUN + of + POSSESSIVE to express a non-redundant meaning.
John loved his mother and father, but he preferred the music of his grandparents to that of his parents.
Since the conveyed meaning here is not redundant, this usage of COPY PRONOUN + of + POSSESSIVE is correct.
Conveyed meaning:
John loved his mother and father, but he preferred the music of his grandparents to the music of his parents.

That said, it is extremely unlikely that an OA on the GMAT will include this sort of usage, so I would be highly skeptical of any answer choice with COPY PRONOUN + of + POSSESSIVE.

Dear Mitch,
Assuming that in the passage may be pointing to artists or musicians , what exactly is including in the correct option B pointing to, artists or musicians ?

COMMA + including serves to introduce examples of the NEAREST PRECEDING PLURAL NOUN.
B: many musicians, including Elvis Presley and Jerry Garcia
Here, COMMA + including serves to introduce examples of many musicians.
