A note on NOUN and VERB modifiers

by aaggar7 » Thu Apr 11, 2013 5:10 am
Hi,

All of you might be aware of the modifiers rules but still I am posting a short note.Hope it is helpful.

Participle (Verb + ing/ed) phrase followed by a "," is used to modify a Noun.

eg Using the latest technology, the engineer solved the problem.

"using...technology" is modifying the Noun-Engineer

where as main clause + comma + (Verb +ing form) modifies the subject + verb.

eg The Adirondack mountains, unlike other mountain ranges that lie on fault lines, are in the shape of a dome, largely because of a deep uplift under the crust of the Earth, occurring about a billion years ago.

Here occurring is modifying the Noun "The Adirondack mountains" which is incorrect
