"IN THAT THEY"

by manishankar » Wed Aug 25, 2010 3:34 am
Teratomas are unusual forms of cancer because they are composed of tissues such as tooth and bone not
normally found in the organ in which the tumor appears.
(A) because they are composed of tissues such as tooth and bone
(B) because they are composed of tissues like tooth and bone that are
(C) because they are composed of tissues, like tooth and bone, tissues
(D) in that their composition, tissues such as tooth and bone, is
(E) in that they are composed of tissues such as tooth and bone, tissues

Can someone please help me understand, when to use phrase such as " IN THAT THEY"

Regards,
Mani

Teratomas are unusual forms of cancer because they are composed of tissues such as tooth and bone not normally found in the organ in which the tumor appears.

The issues:

1. Look at the non-underlined part of the sentence at the end of the sentence.

--> Not normally found in the organ in which the tumor appears.

==> This "not normally found..." MUST be preceded by the words that are not normally found in the organ.

Are they tooth and bone? No because tooth and bone are themselves organs. They should not be found in other organs.
--> So we are left in C and E because tissues can be found in the organs in which tumor appears.

In C, "like tooth and bone" indicate that tooth and bone are similar to tissues. It changes the meaning of the sentence.

A good lesson for the option D:

in that their composition, tissues such as tooth and bone, is

Here, the apposition has been used.

Composition = NOUN
Apposition = Tissues such as tooth and bone.

ONE THING ABOUT CASE IN APPOSITION:

NOUN + COMMA + APPOSITION

==> The words in the apposition MUST be synonymous to the head NOUN before comma.

Example:

Shourav Ganguly, the Indian ex cricket captain, is now anchoring in a reality show.

---> The Indian ex cricket captain is synonymous to Shourav Ganguly.

Another example.

Angelina Jolie, the Hollywood actress, has played the role of a fighting lady.

The Hollywood actress is synonymous to Angelina Jolie.

Now, come to the point of D.

Composition + Comma + Tissues such as tooth and bone.

"Tissues such tooth and bone" is NOT synonymous to "Composition".

--> D is NOT good.

Answer is E.

Now come to the point "In that"

In that = For the reason that

Since all other options are having absolute errors, the use of in that in the correct option is correct.

One suggestion:

Whatever you find in the OG and GMATPREP material as correct are correct. You should NOT question the correct answer why they are correct, rather you should explain how it is correct.

"In that" as it is used in the correct option is fine.

Conclusion: We learn that "in that" can be used in lieu of "for the reason that".

Thanks.
