Say $x were spent on food; thus, $(500 – x) were spent on stationary.

Total tax = 2x/100 + 8(500 – x)/100 = 19

=< x = $350.

The correct answer: D

Hope this helps!

Let x = the amount spent on food, and thus (500 - x) = the amount spent on stationery. Let’s create the equation for the sales tax:

0.02x + 0.08(500 - x) = 19

0.02 + 40 - 0.08x = 19

-0.06x = -21

-6x = -2100

x = 350
