Is this correct?

I saw this sentence.

Each child, teenager and adult was wearing a seat belt on the bus.

The complication is the word Each. I thought each made the now singular. Hence the correct sentence should be

Each child, teenager and adult is wearing a seat belt on the bus.

Correct me if I am wrong.

I think the difference between 'was' and 'is' past vs. present, respectively. They are both singular, it would be different if it the verbs were 'were' and 'are'.
