BTG Community,

My target (see dream :) ) schools are Columbia and NYU. Any tips/insight on what the admissions officers like to see in the students they admit would be greatly appreciated.

Here's a little backround info about me:

I'm currently 24 years old. I graduated from a top tier regional undergraduate program w/ a 3.9 GPA and received 2nd academic honors for my major- international business. I'm a member of three honors societies, but don't hold any leadership roles. The majority of my free time was spent founding, captaining, and playing for my school's club ultimate frisbee team.

Since graduation I have been steadily employed. My first two years after college I worked for a major brokerage firm; one year in a service role and another year in a sales capacity.

I recently moved Arizona and work for a small M&A search / advisory firm. The job is actually a "two year pre-MBA" program. I plan on staying w/ the firm for about 2 - 3 years at which point I plan on returning to NYC.

I haven't taken the GMAT yet.

Non-work / school stuff: I'm a white Jewish male. I was born in Brooklyn, NY, but raised in central New Jersey where I lived most of my life. I've played ultimate frisbee at a mid-tier competative level since undergrade and I enjoy long walks on the beach :)

I didn't post this so people would say you need x GMAT and you have a shot (but if that's what these schools look for, let me know). What I'm looking for is insight that you can't get from US News & World Report or Business Week. What do these schools look for? Do they prefer certain work experience? Do I need to be well connected to even think about these schools? Stuff like that.

As always, thanks all your help Beat the GMATers. If any additional information is needed, just let me know.

- Jay

p.s. If there are any spelling errors, deal with it. I'm at work and shouldn't spend 25% of my day at this website anyway :-)

These two schools are both strong in finance and entrepreneurship so it helps if your post-MBA goals include one of those areas. Also, the learning environments are collaborative so you need to demonstrate that you can be a team player. In terms of GMAT, you definitely want to get as close to the 700+ range as possible.
