In presenting his modus vivendi proposal

by deepamohn » Sat Dec 06, 2008 9:13 pm
In presenting his modus vivendi proposal, Lansing implied that the American government accepted the German view that armed merchant vessels were warships: however, when the proposal was dropped by the Wilson administration, it seemed to be reverting to the British view on this question.

(A) when the proposal was dropped by the Wilson administration, it
(B) after it was dropped, the Wilson administration
(C) by dropping the proposal, the Wilson administration
(D) the Wilson administration dropped the proposal when it
(E) when they dropped the proposal, the Wilson administration

(A) when the proposal was dropped by the Wilson administration, it

Passive

(B) after it was dropped, the Wilson administration

It is ambiguous. Awkward meaning.

(C) by dropping the proposal, the Wilson administration

IMO, the correct answer.

(D) the Wilson administration dropped the proposal when it

It is ambiguous. Administration ? Proposal ?

(E) when they dropped the proposal, the Wilson administration[/quote]

they can't refer to Wilson administration

Scoobydooby, the problem with D is that it makes it sound as if the proposal seemed to be reverting to the British view on the question. C is OK because it's contrasting what Lansing implied about the American government with what the Wilson administration (the actual American government) thought -- not contrasting Wilson with Lansing.

(A) when the proposal was dropped by the Wilson administration, it

" it " seems to refer to proposal...

(B) after it was dropped, the Wilson administration

" it " can refers to german view or proposal...
(C) by dropping the proposal, the Wilson administration

Correct
(D) the Wilson administration dropped the proposal when it

changes the meaning..

(E) when they dropped the proposal, the Wilson administration

they ---- should for administration is incorrect
