To Josephine Baker, Paris was her home...

by rx_11 » Sun Oct 31, 2010 5:33 am
To Josephine Baker, Paris was her home long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate, and she remained in France during the Second World War as a performer and an intelligence agent for the Resistance.

(A) To Josephine Baker, Paris was her home long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate,
(B) For Josephine Baker, long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate, Paris was her home,
(C) Josephine Baker made Paris her home long before to be an expatriate was fashionable,
(D) Long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate, Josephine Baker made Paris her home,
(E) Long before it was fashionable being an expatriate, Paris was home to Josephine Baker,

OA is D

But I feel confused about this one...

'Long before it was fashionable to be an expatriate, Josephine Baker made Paris her home,'

I think this sentence is ambiguous because 'it' seems to refer to Josephine Baker. How can 'it' jump to refer to Paris??

In the sentence above, the pronoun it is an expletive, a pronoun that doesn't refer to anything but is used as a "placeholder" so that the sentence can express its meaning.

It is very hot today, isn't it?

==> What does it refer to?

The same deal here.

Why is the Answer not E ?
Why are we adding 'made' in the Answer as in option D?

Option E has being, which doesn't quite fit.

Couple of issues with E:

1. The preference of GMAT is to not delay the appearance of the 'subject' of the sentence. Observe how late in the sentence "Josephine Baker" appears.

2. With E, the sentence would read: "...Paris was home to Josephine Baker and she remained in France during the Second World War...". Without deliberating too much, there could at least be some level of mis-interpretation that "she" could be referring to "Paris"

Alright thanks..!!
I'm still not sure I'd choose E if this question or a similar one came up again. Sometimes some questions eliminate a choice cause its adding extra words that weren't present originally..!!
