D why isn't C correct?
Because we don't need contrast here...therefore we don't need "but" as a conjunction in 2nd IC , we need "and".

dozens of museums devoted ...., and there are also ...

But hw do i find whether the statement requires contrast or not :(
with contrast also the sentence looks absolutely fine to me...

Is it really ? Think about it. Create a sentence with although and you will realize yourself.
The GMAT is indeed adaptable. Whenever I answer RC, it proficiently 'adapts' itself to mark my 'right' answer 'wrong'.
