GMAT Beat me.

by priyanka.upponi » Fri Nov 14, 2008 6:22 am
:(
So this is what I feel right now. Dejected, low, feels like the end of the world right now. After 1.5 months of studying, and 5 practice tests later, I scored an awful 530 (35Q, 27V).

I dont know yet if I will re-take the exam however, I am thinking about it.
Starting off with AWA did help to shirk off all the tension. And I think I did a pretty good job on AWA's. Maths started off well and I think I spent more than required time on the first few questions after which I realised that I would face a crunch situation. And thats excatly what happened. I had to just mark off answers for the last 4 questions.
This never happened to me on any of the practice tests that I took.

Then started the verbal section. well how can answer choices be this similar!! :!: I have otherwise done pretty well in verbal. In fact my GMAT score has been the lowest compared to all the practice tests I have taken.

I knew I dint do exceptionally well and I was expecting something around 600 but a 530 has left me shaken.
I feel like all my effort has gone down the drain. I plan to apply to B schools in the US and have 3 years of work experience in a large IT company. If it isnt the GMAT then it has to be the profile. So lets see what I can do wit it.
Any ideas suggestions are welcome.

Regards,
Priyanka Upponi

I am sure you also very well know your level and
are clear that 530 is not your level.

Don't worry, just focus again and restart.

I personally think, 530 is not sufficient.
Especially for an Indian with IT background.

Just keep in mind, Indian IT is perhaps the most competitive pool.

Just restart you journey.
I am sure this time you will certainly succees.

Make sure that you do all your practice in a timed manner.
The timed practice is the most important part....

Do let me know if you need any help....

Don't know much about Baruch College. But,i guess ISB needs a bit higher score than 530.If ur profile is exceptional, prolly you may get a call.

Good Luck!

If you did less well than on practice tests, maybe you were just nervous.

Do something about that and also get a good night's sleep beforehand.

If you are generally slower than you should be, maybe get your self psychoeducatonal assessman and see if you qualify for extra time on the test.

Hi stop@800,

Thanks for those motivating words. However I am not sure whether I will retake the GMAT For one reason that I dont have much time , I will not be able to attend classes which I feel is somewhat necessary. I feel that if I am going to retake the GMAT I want to be able to give it one full- fledged attempt. Plus I need to start off with my MBA by fall 09. Many reasons for that though..
Any suggestions on which B schools I should apply to. Have a very good GPA of 3.5 work exp of 3 years and by the time I join it will be around 3.10 yrs.
The reason I am most shattered is because I have always considered verbal to be my strong point be it in communication skills or otherwise.

Anyway... thank you for being supportive and any more ideas, suggestions are most welcome or rather needed.

Thanks,
Priyanka Upponi

Hi iamcste,

Well, the questions were more or less like the OG. Hence would agree that OG is the whole n soul.. However I think the reason why I lagged was because, I sat rechecking the first few questions.. Godd why did I do tht.. and evetually feel short of time..

Thanks,
