General doubt

by bblast » Mon Jan 10, 2011 2:30 am
i came across couple questions in OG 10,12
my query is which of the below are correct ?or all of these are correct ?

1>the population density of bees
2>wolf population
3>population of wolves
4>density of population of X

population of X certainly sounds passive,
->bee population
->wolf population; sounds better.

but i've seen correct answers with
population of wolves etc (OG 10 Q 225)

maybe an expert can highlight.
Cheers !!

Hi Kumar,

Posting Question from OG 10:

Minnesota is the only one of the contiguous forty eight states that still has a sizable wolf population, and where this predator remains the archenemy of cattle and sheep.
A )that still has a sizable wolf population, and where
B) that still has a sizable wolf population, where
C) that still has a sizable population of wolves, and where
D )where the population of wolves is still sizable;
E )where there is still a sizable population of wolves and where

Active vs Passive comes into picture only when you have 2 correct choices with one in active voice and the other in passive voice. In this case Active is preferred.

In this problem we have parallelism issue.
A) That.. and..where
B) That, where
C) That.. and ..where
D) Breaks the sentence into 2 independent clauses. this distorts the meaning.
E) Where.. and.. Where - Parallel

Hence E is picked.

Hope this helps!!

I am unable to recollect the exact question. I believe population density of bees is right usage.
in "bee density population" its not clear on what is modifying what.

If you can find the question, it would be easy to see what is the exact concept.
