From 600 to 720 :)

Hi All

Just back from my gmat 2nd attempt and i scored 720 (M 50 V 37), in my first attempt last year i scored 600 (M 44 , V 29) , largely because i panicked and didnt skip tough questions in the end ran out of time in both verbal and quant .

I will just pinpoint the differences between the prep both times .

1) Manhattan SC guide , Its a Must to do . I had terrible accuracy of 50-60% , Manhattan raises it by 20% atleast !

2) if SC is weak , i strongly reccomend 1000 SC, for many 1000 SC seems waste of time coz of no solutions . this is where google comes in install the google toolbar and copy the question stem of all the questions you got right . Open https://www.beatthegmat.com and click search site , 80% of the times u will get solutions by gmat guru s on this terrific firm for others use google global search . I did 800 odd questions from it not only it raised ma accuracy i started doin SC question under a minute :)

3) After finishing all your prep i.e OG 11 , OG 10 and Kaplan 800 .
Do ETS paper tests except for 2-3 paper tests all tests have new questions which are not in OG s . These tests will set you up nicely for GMAT .

4) Lots of Practice of DS questions , my accuracy in PS was always good. in DS learn to skip when you encounter tough ones no point wasting time During my GMAT prep tests i had gotten Maths 50 when i had 9 questions wrong and 51 when i had only four wrong ! see no point getting stuck it doesnt help !

I know many here will say 720 is not great but for me after a disaster last year its great :) i would have taken this score before exam .

My GMAT mock scores were

Kaplan CD 1 560 :(
Kaplan CD 2 600
i dont agree with their verbal solutions ! hence left them :)
GMAT Prep 1 710 M 50 V 36
Gmat Prep 2 750 M 51 V 41 here i had all the RC questions correct , so this is a key for those looking score in this range :)

Thats all at the moment will add something else if i come to know i missed something :)

You are free to ask me anything .
Thanks a ton to this site and spidey, sahil, rajat_nda their material rocks and to Gmat gurus who share their gyaan :)

This is my first ever post on any forums in an effort to help others :P

Congrats sandykang!
I am curious what studying did you do in between the kaplan tests and after them? and what was the time period? Your scored seemed to make a large leap fast

Kaplan or Princeton?

Hi Sandy,

Congratulations! Do you reccomend a classroom test prep course through Kaplan or Princeton? You've abbreviated the names of books, so could you please give full names as I'd like to follow suit.

Thanks!

@ chillgmat - dude i practiced DS from OG 10, OG 11 , math review Kaplan 800 . All these add up to 600+ questions i guess thats kind of enuff . And oh yes i also did DS questions from www.platinumgmat.com quality was good for tough ones .

@ indir0ver - i did OG 10, OG 11 and kaplan 800 for CR . i never gave so much attention to RC , this is where i lost extra 20 marks i guess :) SOme days i got all RC questions correct and on bad days just 50% . I think the key is to increase your speed and looking back to passage while answering , I had no time for looking back in my last RC on real test .

@taryn123 - dude kaplan cd tests always give u 60-70 lesser than ure expected score on GMAT , however i had realized to cross 700 i need more than 49 in maths coz my verbal still sucks :) so learnt to guess tough ones earlier i wasted too much time on them and ran out of time for others . In GMAP prep 1 i scored 50 in Maths and yet i had 9 wrong answers see if u answer a high difficulty question wrong penalty is not huge :) Key is to answer all questions with in time , something that didnt happen in my first GMAT for both sections .

@sanjbhatia - you need to decide watever is best for you , i have always used coaching classes as a venue to meet new people(girls preferably :) ).If u think in classroom course u do well then go for it but u can save ure bucks because so many gmat gurus and gmat gyaan flows on this firm for free :)
