Pronoun reference question

by bubbliiiiiiii » Tue May 17, 2011 12:57 am
1. Our cat is cuter than those in shelter. ---> WRONG.
2. Our cat is cuter than that in shelter.
3. Our cat is cuter than the one in shelter.
4. Our cat is cuter than the cat in shelter. ---> CORRECT.

Between sentences 2 and 3 which one is correct and why? If neither of them is correct can you please rewrite the correct version of it and shed some lite on why neither of the sentences is correct?
Regards,

Pranay

I Think both the versions 2 and 3 are wrong because that cannot modify Cat, in sentence 3 the one is not the correct way of referring back to cat....and usage of those is wrong as Cat is singular ...correct way is repeating the cat (or) synonym for cat....

Even i feel that both 2 and 3 are wrong.

2: that is a modifier and is used to modify something. To replicate or create a copy we need to use that of.
Saying that, even i m confused about whether or not the following sentence is correct-
Our cat is cuter than that of in shelter.

3:Pronoun the one does not clearly mentions the noun it is referring. And in the case of pronoun its always best to repeat the noun or its generic synonym. Its correct form will be the option 4.

Few days back I had put a query to an expert and he told me that we can compare singular things with plural things when the comparison is logical...........I don't think so A is wrong because of "those" as we are comparing the "cuter" part of the cat and neither I feel C is wrong because of the use of "one" as one is logically refering to the cat...........please correct me if I am wrong

we can surely compare, but we need to make sure of two things:first, the comparison being made is logical(cuteness in this case) and second when number change occurs, we reintroduce the noun. So i feel that 1 should be:
Our cat is cuter than those CATS in shelter.
