GMAC OG wrong on a ratio answer?

by mbahereicome » Thu Jul 22, 2010 8:47 pm
Page 303 of 12th edition Question 43

Question from the guide:
What is the tenths digit in the decimal represemtation of a certain number?
1) The number is less than 1/3
2) The number is greater than 1/4

The answer says E - neither statement is sufficient

Should it not be C? (both statements together)

0, 1, 2, and 3 are less than 1/3 or .33 for tenths digit
3, 4, 5 ... are greater than 1/4 or .25 for tenths digit
therefore answer must be 3 which means you need both statements to figure out

Why does the guide say 2 is greater than .25 for tenths digit? Am I missing something?

thanks

let no be x

1)
x<0.33

insuff

2)
x>0.25
insuff

combined 1 and 2
note: it is not mentioned that the number is rounded to 10th digit. if it was the answer would have been C

tenths digit can be 2,3
hence insuff

E

Its E only

x<1/3

x<0.33

x>1/4

x>0.25

0.25>x<0.33

x can be 0.26,0.27,0.28,0.29.Here tenths digit is 2.

x can be 0.3,0.31,0.32.Here tenths digit is 3.

Tenths digit can be 2 or 3.

Hence E

Hope this clarify
