This question is really just about staying organized and doing the necessary arithmetic. However, the answer choices are 'spread out' enough that you can actually avoid doing all of the math and use some estimation to get to the correct answer.
Based on the pay scale described in the prompt, Joe would be paid:
(300)(.45) + (225)(.65)
.45 is a little less than 1/2, so the 'first part' of the calculation would be a little less than $150.
.65 is greater than 1/2, so the 'second part' of the calculation would be a more than $112
As an estimate, Joe would earn about $150 + 112 = $262. There's only one answer that's close to that...

=(.45)300 + (525-300)(.65)
= 135+ 146.25
= 281.25
