Explantion sought

by engg.manik » Fri Jul 03, 2009 4:58 am
Charles Darwin noted specific mechanisms of competition among species occupying adjacent territories. One of the specific mechanism of inter-space competition is resource depletion. This means that one of the competing species harvests resources more efficiently and lowers resource levels to the point where it can still survive but its competitor cannot.

If the above statements are true which of the following is most likely to give species X an advantage over competing species Y .

A)Their shared habitat is such that only species Y is not the prey of another species.
B)Territorial fights are frequent among members of species X but occur rarely between species X & Y.
C)Member of species X are more uniform in their abilities to harvest resources than are member of species Y
D)Resources needed by both species are harvested more efficiently by species X than by species Y.
E)X & Y together deplete the resources required by a common advisory.

Please help me to understand the passage and then the correct answer

What makes C wrong ?

Am hanging between C & D.
C)Member of species X are more uniform in their abilities to harvest resources than are member of species Y
- X is more uniform in harvesting resources. Means D is not uniform sometimes consuming more and sometimes less. But if in a specific time period (say), X is uniformly harvesting but Y is consuming more. Then Y has an advn then X . Similarly if Y consumes less , then X has an advantage.

Coz am stuck here. :( . Nybody clarify.
Also, am i digging a lil too deep ?

D)Resources needed by both species are harvested more efficiently by species X than by species Y. Straight out from the passage.

I chose D and not C b/c D can be proven from the stimulus but not C.

The stimulus doesn't state anything about uniformity or HOW one species harvests more resources than the other species.

The stimulus just states one species harvest more efficiently than the other.

The OA is D,

If one of the ways the species compete is through resource depletion,
an advantage of one species over another can be in harvesting resources equally needed by both

I agree with D, though C is close (yet a trap). D is stated in the passage while C really isn't. We aren't too concerned with uniformity.
Have you wondered how you could have found such a treasure? -T

D seems to be the best choice here
