The following 3 I know are singular:
1) The group is going to the store.
2) The number is...
3) The New Yorker is going to the store.
What about this one:
4) The New Yorkers IS/ARE going to the store. ??
"New Yorkers" sounds like a group, which is singular, but it doesn't sound right. I know we're not supposed to listen to our ears, but rather follow the rules. So for 4) is it singular or plural?
