here but is required for the meaning of the sentence to standout.

hence A/C/E remains. Also a verb is required after "but" for proper comparison. C/E remains. now the sentence says the phenomenon is still going on i.e. present tense hence C.

(E) but so did unemployment and prices
To show the contrast, You have to use but. 'and' shows the continuation.

A -
B - Usage of And
C - Correct.
D - Usage of And
E - 'did' does not go with 'Soared'. You have to use the helping verb which makes sense with the main verb of first part.

This one tests on parallelism. The first clause use Present perfect tense, so the second part (I mean the second clause) must use Present perfect. Therefore, C.
