What is the value of y?

(1) 3|x2 – 4| = y – 2

(2) |3 – y| = 11


OA: C

[spoiler]state 1: y >= 2
state 2: y = 11 or y = -8
=> correct answer is C[/spoiler]

(1) 3|x2 – 4| = y – 2

This first statement tells us that the left side of the equation is a non-negative number. We do not have X in the rest of the question so

y-2>0

(2) |3 – y| = 11

a) 3-y = 11 , this gives a negative y

b) y-3 -11 , this gives us a positive y

Since we know y can not be negative, we can choose (C)

no idea about the value of y but know its sign

insuff

we know y has to be positive for first equation
