Deferral of admit. URGENT HELP NEEDED!!!

by abhip.9294 » Sat Jul 02, 2016 11:16 pm
I have an admit from a top 20 school in the US for the full time MBA program this fall. This admit came around the time when my H1 application was filed by the company I work for. I want to defer the admit by one year since the H1 will get processed and I won't have to go through the lottery process later when I graduate from the school (since the H1 was already picked in the previous lottery). This will also make me a very strong candidate for companies who are hesitant on visa sponsorships. I wanted to check with the university if they would let me defer by one year so that my h1 would get processed and I can join in the next fall.
Please advice if this reason would be considered by the adm committee.
Also will it have any negative effect except for they refusing to defer the admit for the next fall ?

There will not be any negative effect apart from the fact that you might to fill in a completely new application and compete with a new set of applicants in the next cycle.

The schools typically defer your admission in extenuating circumstances of: marriage, children, military transfer, accident

Hi,
Being upfront with the schools is the best way to deal with this. I would say, tell them the exact reason and also make a case as to how this 1 additional year would also benefit them - think about better cohort participation and more "employable". All schools like it when they are shown to be benefitted from a candidate just like a candidate is benefitted from them.
In most likelihood, the school will ask you to reapply next year and if anything, this will provide you with the opportunity to come across as honest and genuine through your essays.
I would also say that a phone call rather than an email might be better.
Hope this helps.
Do keep me updated how the conversation goes.

I wish you the best in this situation. I think the best scenario is to request to speak with someone in admissions. You may have a better outcome if you can speak to someone directly as you will be able to explain your situation. Every school is slightly different on whether they will grant a deferral- I don't see this as falling under the usual reasons - hence why you might be best off asking the school directly and I think face to face or at least over phone or skype may give you your best chance. Good luck!
