What does E change in meaning ? It looks fine to me ...
Getting defeated is just a temporary notion, giving it up is what makes it permanent.

"although the climate is Europe is fairly humid" is an appositive phrase set off by two commas. The MEANING of the parenthetical is "because libraries are not subjected."
The "although" is like a side-note, anticipating the reader's confusion as to why the books would not be damaged by humidity.
