He is my solution to this problem:

According to "A leading figure in the Scottish Enlightenment", the subject should be a person. Noticing this, we can get rid of answer choice A,B, and C.

When we want to compare things, we use idiomatic expression x is to y what a is to b.
So, answer choice E is the correct one :)
Sincerely,
Amir,

{A} - INCORRECT; "figure" is singular.. so subject must be singular as well.. "books" is plural
{B} - INCORRECT; "figure" is singular.. so subject must be singular as well.. "books" is plural
{C} - INCORRECT; "figure" is singular.. so subject must be singular as well.. "books" is plural
{D} - INCORRECT; "similar to" is incorrect
{E} - CORRECT

Ans: E
Didn't chose D because it sounded like capitalism is similar to Marx's.
I didn't know about the idiom.

Hi guptas,

There are a number of 2-part idiom/parallel phrases that you could see on the GMAT. Some of them are obvious:

Either.....or......
Neither....nor....
As.....as.....

While others are more subtle/complicated:

Not only....but also....
Just as....so....

Knowing the patterns that can appear in SCs makes the whole process of solving them a bit easier.

amirhakimi noticed the correct 2-parter for this SC (that is in the correct answer).
