Though the "curds and whey" of the nursery rhyme sounds exotic or old-fashioned, they are likely to be something similar to cottage cheese.

A. they are likely to be something similar to cottage cheese

B. they are likely to be similar to cottage cheese is

C. it is likely to be similar to cottage cheese

D. it is likely to be something similar to cottage cheese

E. it is likely to be similar to what cottage cheese is

IMO C

I think the "curds and whey" will be considered as singular and hence A and B can be eliminated.
Between C, D and E:

E does not make any sense at all cos it ends with is

D is a bit wordy and hence C is the answer.

I honestly didn't know that what's in the quotes is singular, but you can obviously tell this from the word sounds because it is not underlined. Going with this logic, only C makes sense.

I really like this question... This question is again a perfect example of how the non underlined part of the sentence gives way to the correct answer....

Read: Though the "curds and whey" of the nursery rhyme sounds exotic or old-fashioned... usage of sounds makes it totally clear that curd and whey is singular...

Hence... A&B can eliminated straight away... Among C, D & E... It is pretty clear that the answer should be C...
