Alternative transcript

by mjjking » Mon Feb 25, 2008 8:52 am
Hi Lisa,
i'm planning to build up an alternative transcript as my university curriculum doesn't show many courses with quantitative skills required (only microeconomics and development economics).

I was thinking about macroeconomics, statistics and calculus. What do you think?
Alternatively, I think I'd be better off by taking a math for management course offered online by UCLA. What do you think? You can find the syllabus here:

This course provides a fundamental background for administrators in the public and private economic sectors, as well as a solid review of pre-MBA mathematics. Topics include linear and matrix algebra (with special emphasis on demand/supply and cost/revenue analysis) and differential calculus. For technical requirements click here. Enrollment limited.

I don't know wheter this course would be ok or wheter an introduction to calculus would be better. What do you think?

Thanks a lot for your feedback!

I just saw the course description and there is really nothing much more than you mentioned on the website. Having said that, I do think you should try and take this class. It provides you with good background before your MBA. You should also try to look at MIT's OCW tonnes of course information available online for free ;) Although you don't get a grade or transcript at the end of the class.

Dear Rob:

The math for management course sounds interesting and probably worth your time if it has been a long time since you learned algebra and linear math. Those are both critical foundations for your finance courses. A calculus class is also a good idea if you never took it or it has been a long time. The only other quant class finance professors might recommend is a statistics class. Most of them would tell you the math foundation of linear math, algebra and calculus is what you need and imperative to have when you start the program.

Lisa

Hi Lisa,
do you think my 680 GMAT score will still be competitive next year for schools like UNC, USC, Vanderbilt and Indiana even if there's been a steady increase in the number of applications and in the average gmat scores?

thanks a lot!

Dear Rob:

A 680 is always a competitive score, but a GMAT score alone will not guarantee admission into any program. You should shoot for the first round and ensure all other parts of our application are strong, highlighting what is unique about you.

Best of luck!
Lisa

Dear Mjj,

I was looking for the 'Maths for MGT' course on UCLA but could not find it. Could you send me a link or tell me which page is it on.

Regards,

Mohit
