Hi I have a career goal question.
Most people's long term career aspirations in the essays are quite extravagant and interesting such as setting up their own company, working for the world bank etc.
How about if my real career aspiration is to work in equity research focusing on the tech sector. (I currently work in real estate IBD so this is a sector switch). Can I write this as my long term career aspiration.......as although it is genuine it seems rather boring compared to some others?

Hi -
Thanks for the inquiry.
There is no "right" answer to the long-term career goal/vision question. What is important is that you are true to yourself in your answer, present compelling reasons as to why you feel strongly about this goal and discuss how earning an MBA is important to your achievement of that goal.
In addition, based on our conversations with Admissions Directors from several top programs, the Committee wants to see that you have done your "homework" in terms of getting to know your targeted industry via networking, career shadowing, etc. In your case, it seems as though you are not targeting an industry switch (i.e. you plan to say in finance) but a functional switch nonetheless.
Check out the following link from our blog which discusses career goals as it relates to employability in this challenging economic environment.

I hope this helps.
