Building large new hospitals

by neer.king » Fri Aug 03, 2012 5:21 am
Building large new hospitals in the bistate area would constitute a wasteful use of resources, on the basis of avoidance of duplicated facilities alone.

1. on the basis of avoidance of duplicated facilities alone
2. on the grounds of avoiding duplicated facilities alone.
3. solely in that duplicated facilities should be avoided.
4. while the duplication of facilities should be avoided
5. if only because the duplication of facilities should be avoided.

please explain.

Option 3, 4 and 5 -> changing the meaning of the original sentence.

Between 1 and 2 option 2 is more direct.

Hence Correct choice 2.

1. on the basis of avoidance of duplicated facilities alone
2. on the grounds of avoiding duplicated facilities alone.
please explain.
2- THE GROUNDS (sentence talks about only ONE REASON ie DUPLICATE FACILITIES and therefore GROUNDS should have been SINGULAR, ground). Drop (2)

I think its always used as "on the grounds of" which means "on the basis of", and it says "avoiding duplicated facilities alone" which means only one reason.

The answer for this is E

If only because - unless

Now try to substitute the word there. This is one of the unique construction of IF
