Hi
Thumb rule is - earlier the better.
June would be a good time to start - you would get 3 months to shape up your essays.
Have you already taken GMAT?

Same situation here, and I was thinking about getting started w/ recommendation letters now, and focus on essays in June; what is more, sometimes BSchools may slightly change their essays from one year to another, so to me it makes sense to wait a little bit. Advice is highly appreciated.

Before B-school release their essay questions, you may begin brainstorming your ideas for essays. Even though B-schools change their essay topics from one year to another, you can still do some ground work that will help you organizing your ideas for essays.
All schools will expect you to write your goals essay, so write down your short term and long term goals.Make sure your goals are realistic as well as ambitious.Ask yourself why you need an MBA and why now? Write that down.
Also, start thinking of your greatest leadership experiences and other accomplishments.
Think about your background, your greatest strengths and how these will help you add value to your target school.
I hope that helped.

Hi all,
myEssayReview has a great point regarding how to phase into it. You shouldn't think of this process as "essays, check", "recommendations, check". Look at it holistically. In the summer, so June/July, is when you should be looking through your story, identifying your target schools, locating weaknesses in your application, and consolidating materials on your experiences. This is the critical first step to approaching your essays. Once you have this general story and an understanding of self, you can work to tailor it to each of your programs as you go through the essay process.
Also, without this, it will be very difficult to prepare your recommenders and that could leave you with sub par recommendations. Keep in mind, recommenders play an integral role in how you tell your story and they must be leveraged appropriately.
Wait until the essays come out to write them but have your story established before hand.
Good luck!

Good for you for thinking about your applications well in advance!
In many ways, you can view your application as a marketing plan.
When I work with applicants, my first step is to identify overall strengths in their background and in their personality. From this, the applicant and I can identify the key items to emphasize throughout the application (essays, resume, interview, recommendations). When approached from this perspective, an application is a cohesive document, and not a stack of required items.
I recommend you start with this.
Usually, new essay questions are released in the summer, typically July. Even if there are new questions, there are going to be concepts that are the same among business schools.
These are:
- Why do you want to pursue an MBA?
- What is your career goal immediately post-MBA?
- How do you contribute to our MBA classroom?
- Why are you interested in our program?
- What key characteristics make you a good MBA candidate and a good match for our program?
If, after identifying your key themes, you begin to work on answers to these questions, you'll be prepared with content that can be edited and used for application essays, interviews, suggestions to your recommenders.
It may also cause you to dig deep into your decision process, and may cause you to look at your initial choice schools in a different light.
Continue to stay ahead of the schedule!

June would put you ahead of the curve, as some schools will not even have released their essay prompts by then. But starting the process that early will allow you to get through at least 4-5 applications for R1 if you can afford the time it takes to do a bang up job.
Good Luck!

Hi Varun,
June would be great. You will save for yourself a lot of time to review your essay again and again. Application essays are highly important for Admission committees. They look for people who have demonstrated leadership ability. You would have to grill through your past where you have worked as a team lead or taken initiatives.
You would also need to write application essays which shows your ability to introspect and communicate your point of view. It helps the admissions team to judge how you view yourself, your personal values and competencies.
To write a highly effective and coherent essay, you need time.
Best of Luck!

Hi Varun,
I agree with other folks. As a good application takes a good amount of time, I would suggest you to devote one hour everyday from today onward. Get your story ready and then if you feel like, you may get it reviewed by proficient consultants.
Let me know if you require any other assistance. You may PM your details for free profile evaluation and selection of b-schools.
Regards
Erina
