I just finished my 3rd Manhatan GMAT prep simulation and I scored 590. The last two times over the last week I got 610 and 600, respectively. Although these scores are an improvement from when I took my first exam a month ago (510) I feel like I am not improving anymore.

My exam is on Aug 17th. I am having trouble with the timing and also, it seems like I cannot answer the questions on the simulation as well as I can if I am going through the OFG. I have been doing the questions from the OFG times aswell.

What am I doing wrong? How can I improve? I am aiming for a 690.

Thanks in advance.

Hi - you've shown good improvement already in just a month, so congratulations with that. You mention that you've taken the three most recent tests in the past week. You shouldn't expect to show improvement in a week's time. It typically takes 2-3 weeks of concerted study to show a moderate score improvement.

You may need more time to improve another 100 points - 3 more weeks is not a lot of time and it is usually harder to jump from 600 to 700 than from 500 to 600. Most people study longer before taking the test; our course is 9 weeks long and I tell my students to take the test 2-3 weeks after the course ends. They are also studying every day or almost every day throughout that time period.

Run all of the score reports available on your tests so that you can diagnose your strengths and weaknesses, in terms of content, question type, and pacing. Since you've been taking our tests, you've got all of that data at your fingertips, but you've got to analyze it and figure out from there what to do. If you need help with that, come back and post specific details from your score reports - but you can do the best job of analyzing it b/c you can look at the entire test and the full set of results across all of the tests.

Hi,
I have been analysing my results from my practice tests and what I find is that I can do the majority of the questions I get wrong afterwords only. During the test I seem to pick the one answer that is slight different from the wrong one. This is clearly evident in the SC & CR. I'll choose C instead of D, when C and C are so similar. I have been doing the OFG with a timer, but perhaps I need more practice to improve to 700.

I have signed up for the 2 day weekend crash couse offered by Manhattan in London. Some of the people I spoke with from the Manhattan office said that this course should be a good way to plug any holes in my work, but my exam is on Aug 17 and the course is on Aug11/12. Might not be enough time between to practice.

Do you suggest in this case that I delay the exam, keeping in mind that I am not working now and I have full days to prepare? I was thinking of doing the test anyway as a learning point and then take it again if it doesn't go well.

Thanks

If you haven't taken the official exam before, I'd say go for it - it will give you good experience and give you an idea what to work on if you need to take it again. I tell all my students to assume they'll take it twice, and then it's just a bonus if they don't have to. The schools don't care if you take it twice.

If you have already taken it before, you'll need to think a little more carefully about it - have you taken it before?

I haven't taken it before. This would be my first time.

I guess the worry is always that twice is not sufficient and I would have to take it a third time!!!! :?

Following our discussions I thought about just delaying it by one week, which would give me that little extra time to practice after the Manhattan course. This would also be in line with your recommendation to do the exam 2-3 weeks after a course.

I am dedicating the next 2 weeks to pure practice, without interrupting with simulations, (from OFG 10th and Purple/Green OFG books). Then it will be simulations and re-doing the harder questions in between from OFG.

Thanks
