Kicked in the Face! 590 40Q 31V Need Help!

by dmcreavy » Fri Mar 06, 2009 4:58 pm
Just took the GMAT today and it kicked me right straight between the eyes. I felt the math got hard much quicker than the practice tests I took and I ended up having to quickly guess answers to the last SIX questions! I think that killed my Quant score as I was scoring regularly in the mid to upper 40s. Main thing I need is help with sentence correction. Does anyone have a good resource for sentence correction? I have Kaplan 800 but I just need more practice problems... Any help to these problems would be greatly appreciated, I'm not giving up I'm rescheduling right now!

Dont give up and u r not which is good!

Get Manhattan GMAT sentence correction guide->3rd edition(u also get access to their 6 full length CATS).

Also if u feel like u need to work on basics of sentence correction get

Doing Grammar by Max Morenborg (u can get the 2nd edition a whole lot cheaper than the 3rd on Amazon)

Just my 2 cents...

CR

Dmcreavy,

For quant do an advanced search on this forum usingthe following keywords:

1) number properties
2) remainders
3) absolute
4) inequalities
5) even/odd
6) mean/median/standarad deviation
7) divisors
8) factors

etc..

You will stumble upon lots of problems which u can use to practice. If u read how the experts like Stuart/Ian/Ron and other users approach problems u will have lot of takeaways in addition to what u have in your toolkit.

Eg: Without knowing the sign of the varaibles involved in a inequality u cannot multiply or divide by it.

If u know a variable(number) is negative then if u mutliply or divide by that then the inequality reverses.

-x > -x^2

Multiply by -1 on boh sides

x < x^2

I am sure u can go from a 590 to a 700. Also practice quant and Verbal i.e. dont sacrifice one for the other which I am sure u r aware.

Hope this helps!

Regards,
CR

Thanks again CR, I took yesterday and today off and I'm back at it again tomorrow. I picked up both the SC and Doing Grammar books to start focusing more on verbal. Also, I did some searches like you said and found some tougher problems to work on for quant. I really believe my quant issues are related to timing and knowing when to admit defeat and move past a question. Thanks for the help, although its a bit defeating having to start up the studyin again, I know I am capable of doing much better!

dmcreavy,

I'm sorry to hear that you were disappointed with your GMAT score. I am not a native english speaker but I vastly improved my sentence correction using 3 tools:

1) Manhattan GMAT SC guide
2) Official Guides
3) GMATFix.com Flashcard set. If you want to hone in on specific sentence correction topics and carefully track your progress, this is where I would start. There is a free set on the site if you go to "tools" in the main menu.

You can read more about how I used these three tools togethere here: https://tinyurl.com/btgmatpost. Take a day to mourn and get back on that horse :-) Let us know how it goes
