Military college (dis)advantages?

by fltingley » Wed Mar 18, 2009 12:09 pm
I went to a well-known military college (note: military college, not academy) for my undergrad.

While these schools are not reknown for being overly academically strenuous, they are places that challenge their student in different ways, like through the military system, disciplinary system, physical training requirements, etc. Also, I should note that I held military leadership positions where I was responsible for the training and development of 10-12 cadets at a time.

How do you see this playing into my MBA application?

Final note: my GPA was a 3.69/4.0 in Biz Admin and I graduated a semester early.

Thanks in advance!

Thanks for your post. First of all, dont discount your military experience. Most top MBA programs strongly value military experience, esp your leadership and teamwork training. The key is to demonstrate the ability to handle the academic rigor of the program. Obviously, the GMAT will be a huge factor, so makes sure score in the top tier of the schools you are applying too. At the same time, you may consider taking one or two post-grad courses (such as Stats or Calculus) to help AdCom overcome any concern they have of your quat abilities.
