Assumption Question

by coolmrityu » Sat Mar 30, 2013 8:28 pm
In an effort to reduce the amount of fat and the number of calories that they
consume, many citizens of the United States are making significant changes in
their diets. For them staying in shape and looking fit now take precedence over
eating foods that are filling and that taste good. It is likely that if they maintain
these new priorities with consistent regard for other health issues, the length and
quality of their lives will increase significantly.

Which one of the following is an assumption upon which the argument is based?

A. Eating foods that are filling and tastes good is inconsistent with
staying in shape and looking fit.
B. Controlling the quality of one's life requires more than mere
dietary adjustments.
C. A combination of diet and exercise is necessary if one wishes to
stay in shape and look fit.
D. Many citizens of the United States have only recently discovered
the importance of diet to living a longer, healthier life.
E. Staying in shape and looking good are current goals for most
citizens of the United States.

Answer after discussion..

A. Eating foods that are filling and tastes good is inconsistent with
staying in shape and looking fit. Keep it aside
B. Controlling the quality of one's life requires more than mere
dietary adjustments. : Nowhere mentioned quality of life
C. A combination of diet and exercise is necessary if one wishes to
stay in shape and look fit. : Excercise is out of scope
D. Many citizens of the United States have only recently discovered
the importance of diet to living a longer, healthier life. : Keep it aside
E. Staying in shape and looking good are current goals for most
citizens of the United States. : Mentioned in para 3rd n 4th line

Confuse between A and D
Stil would go with A: as in D, We are not sure it is recent development in America

IMO B

The conclusion of the argument is "the length and quality of their lives will increase significantly" The premise talks about maintaining the new priorities with consistent regard for other health issues.

The assumption needs to imply not only effects of dietary adjustments but also other factors which contribute to "Quality of Life", which is clearly stated in B

negating Option B will hamper the conclusion more than negating any other likely option. IMO B it is.

Nope...This one should be definitely A. Notice the missing link from reducing the amount of fat and the number of calories to eating foods that are filling and taste good.

What's the source and OA?

Argument says: many people in US making changes to their diet to eliminate foods that filling and that taste good.
Conc: if people continue to avoit these FILLING and TASTY food with other health issues, quality of life will Increase significantly.

A states Eating foods that are filling and tastes good is inconsistent with
staying in shape and looking fit.
if we negate this option: FILLING and TASTY FOOD is CONSISTENT with better quality of life. If this were true, then as per the conclusion, eliminating these from our diet will NOT INCREASE the quality of life significantly.
negating answer choice A makes the conclusion fall apart. that's what assumptions do.

hence IMO it should be A
