The sentence starts with "Of the People" so for parallelism after comma it should name of a person IMO D

B correctly qualifies Martin Luther as the best amongst those who brought about the reformation. 'better known' is usually used to qualify a noun or pronoun. For e.g.

Ruby is better known as a playwright than a stuntmaster. Both A and E use redundant terms.

(A) Martin Luther is the best known of them. ---- sentence starts with of the people therefore, we don't require part to start with the name
(B) the best known is Martin Luther
(C) the better known of them was Martin Luther
(D) Martin Luther is better known
(E) the best known one was Martin Luther

IMO B
(A) Martin Luther is the best known of them. (Best of them is redundant - Best is sufficient)
(B) the best known is Martin Luther
(C) the better known of them was Martin Luther (Martin Luther is still known)
(D) Martin Luther is better known (unless two entities are compared we cannot use better)
(E) the best known one was Martin Luther. (Martin Luther is still known)
Smack is Back ...
It takes time and effort to explain, so if my comment helped you please press Thanks button :)

Best is an appropiate usage here because here Martin Luther compared with the rest of the population - superlative degree. Better is inappropiate here.

X is better than Y ( correct ) - its comparative.
But when we want to convey superlative degree, comparing with the rest of pupulation we have to use "best"

So in A, B and E . B is the best.

A - ambigious "them"
E- ambigious "one"

I hope this helps.

Although I chose B over A since it looks better while speaking. But I dont have any convincing answer to justify that. And also according to the parallelism, it doenst look very right. A looks better than B considering parallelism. Can some expert please provide some help on this.

Thanks
Mankey

Better is used to compare TWO THINGS. Best is used to compare MORE THAN TWO THINGS. Since this SC is comparing the PEOPLE who brought about the reformation, better (in C and D) is incorrect. Eliminate C and D.

In A, of them is redundant with of the people. Eliminate A.

In E, was implies that Martin Luther no longer is the best known. The intended meaning of the sentence is that Martin Luther IS the best known. Eliminate E.

The correct answer is B.
