As it becomes....

by vidhya16 » Tue Jun 14, 2011 6:02 am
As it becomes more frequent to have spouses who both work outside the home , companies are beginning to help in finding new employement for the spouses of transferred employees.

(A)it becomes more frequent to have spouses who both work outside the home
(B)it becomes more frequent to have couples both working outside the home
(C)it becomes more common that both husband and wife should be working outside the home
(D)it becomes more common for both husband and wife to work outside the home
(E)couples in which both of the spouses working outside the home become more common

Hi, i agree that "should be" seems incorrect but still don't u think the sentence will be better written if we introduce a relative clause explaining what becomes more common as Op C does????

As it becomes more frequent to have spouses who both work outside the home , companies are beginning to help in finding new employement for the spouses of transferred employees.

(A)it becomes more frequent to have spouses who both work outside the home ---------> spouses is the wrong word over here and moreover the sentence changes the intended meaning
(B)it becomes more frequent to have couples both working outside the home ------> same as A
(C)it becomes more common that both husband and wife should be working outside the home -------> avoid strong words
(D)it becomes more common for both husband and wife to work outside the home
(E)couples in which both of the spouses working outside the home become more common-------> changes the intended meaning

Hi Atul,

I don't feel that introduction of relative clause will be appropriate usage because if you see the sentence as it becomes more common that both husband and wife work outside home, in this I feel something is pushing husband and wife to work outside, which is not the intended meaning of the original sentence..........please correct me if I am wrong........

Hi,
I am not too sure about the usage of relative clause being better in this case. I still feel D sounds better than modified version of C.

OA is D. Can some one explain clearly why D is the best option.

My thought process

C-awkward use of should be
E-is cumbersome
D-use of "common"

Best of A & B is B.

Hi,
Common - widely known or encountered everywhere
frequent - occurring quite often.
Here, the the context is about being observed everywhere and not how frequently it occurs. So, common is the correct word.
