Applying through the Consortium

by sunman » Mon Jul 09, 2012 6:55 am
Hi all,

I emailed the consortium and received the this response (below). With that being said, are there any disadvantages to applying through the Consortium? Would I be analyzed by the school any differently than if I were to apply normally?

For example, if the school judges that I haven't done enough in my career to help underrepresented minorities, would that potentially sink my application as a Consortium Applicant compared with if I applied through the regular channel?

Any expert advice on the matter would be much appreciated!

Sonny,

First, you do not need to be African American, Hispanic American or Native American in order to apply; you only need to be a US citizen or US permanent resident who can demonstrate commitment to our mission, and you must have a Bachelor's degree. When thinking about how you demonstrate commitment to the mission, think about what you have done personally or professionally that supports those underrepresented groups. From what you've described, you appear to have that part covered. Let us know if you have any additional questions.

Thank You,

Subject: Asian American Marine Officer ---> Consortium?

Good morning sir/ma'am,

My name is Sonny, I was born in Taiwan, but I lived in South Africa for six years from 1992-1999. Ever since witnessing the abject poverty of black South Africans, I've grown a passion for pursuing a career to serve the indigent in developing economies. We moved to the United States in 1999. After I graduated from high school in 2004, I took a year off for training and enlisted in the Marine Reserves, hoping I'd get an opportunity to make a difference in the lives of people in Iraq or Afghanistan. From 2005-2009, while I was in the reserves I attended the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. I am currently serving as a Marine Officer in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

Throughout my college and post-college career, I have dedicated my time towards improving the social mobility of underprivileged minorities. I have volunteered for service projects in the inner city of Chicago, I've made a Habitat Trip to a poverty stricken region of Georgia, and tutored children in math and reading in a homeless shelter in San Diego.

I was wondering, would I be eligible for Consortium membership consideration? Or it membership restricted to those who are actually African American, Hispanic American, or Native American?

Very Respectfully,

Sonny

I don't know about admission chances, but a quick search discovered this:

Looks like the main advantage is that One application allows you to apply to up to six Consortium schools.
