Tense Problem!

by apurva.jalit » Fri Sep 13, 2013 11:12 am
Considering all of the scientists who have been awarded the Nobel Prize, perhaps none is more lauded as the chemist Mendel, who pioneered the study of several new elements and paved the way for some of the great discoveries of the modern era.
A)perhaps none is more lauded as
B)perhaps none was more lauded as
C)it may be that none is more lauded than
D)maybe none is more lauded than
E)perhaps none was more lauded than
I believe the tense here should be present tense since first phrase uses "have been awarded".
But is this reasoning correct? OA is E

Hi apurva.jalit,

This SC has a two-part phrase built into it:

More....than....

Since all of the answer choices use the word "more", your answer needs the word "than." Eliminate A and B

Of the remaining answers, the proper style is to use the word "perhaps."

Final Answer: E

I think as is not correct usage, so A and B are out.

C has "it" so, it is wrong usage here.

D has "is", but we need was

E correct option

I think have been awarded has past activity in it, hence that should be followed by "was".

Hope I am right!
You can, for example never foretell what any one man will do, but you can say with precision what an average number will be up to!

Hi vinay1983,
I feel that awarded is not the activity which we are discussing here, "is" or "was" determines whether this guy "Mendel" is still more lauded or this is a story of past. So I am not able to rule out present tense here.

Hi Maybe I was too brief. What I am trying to say is Apart from the tenses and stuff also try to see what the sentence or author intends to say.

Here initially it is said that "of all the scientist who were awarded some prize, none "was" as famous or recognized as was Mendel". Here we are not comparing "scientist" and "Mendel" per se, but rather their achievement or they being awarded the prize. It's something in the past that has happened and we are recognizing the fact that Mendel was the most lauded among the scientists.

It is difficult to specifically explain what you are asking. I would rather suggest understanding the intent or the context of the passage also.

Lots of words or phrases can have different intent or meaning based on the context.

I hope I am clear. Maybe the Experts can pitch in to help you resolve your dilemma better than me.

Thanks!

Thanks vinay1983 for taking efforts to explain it to me. I am still not very much convinced but do see the point you are trying to make. Will try analyse this question with a new approach :)
